Mitchell Symphony Band takes Gold in NYC!
The Mitchell Middle School Symphony Band, under the direction of Rex Rukavina, recently competed in the 2017 Heritage Music Festival in New York City. The group had a combined score that earned them the highest possible rating of “Gold” while also coming in second place at the festival. In addition, the Symphony Band received the “Spirit Award” which is given to the group that best represents their school and community while positively interacting and working with festival staff and other competing groups. This is the second time the Symphony Band has received this award.
In addition to the competition, the group experienced Niagara Falls; the Empire State Building; a walking tour around Times Square and mid-town Manhattan; a dinner cruise around lower Manhattan; the USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum; the 9/11 Memorial and a performance by the Blue Man Group. Four new clarinets purchased through "DonorsChoose.org"
Mr. Rukavina submitted a proposal through the website, "donorschoose.org" for four new student model clarinets. The inventory of student clarinets had been pretty much used up and the only instruments left were very old - some dating back to the 1960's. Mr. Rukavina submitted the proposal online and on Facebook on October 27th, 2016 and only three days later the entire proposal was fully funded by former Mitchell Band Students and various other people who wanted to donate to a good cause! As you can see on the faces of these young beginning musicians, opening the case of a brand new instrument is something special as they begin their journey of learning and loving music!

Spaghetti Dinner a huge success!
The Spaghetti Dinner/Silent Auction fund raiser to support the Mitchell bands was a huge success! It was really awesome to see so many students, parents, family and friends come out for a terrific dinner and a ton of fun! The combined 7th/8th grade concert band played one song (hey - it's only the beginning of October!) and everything went smoothly. Many, many thanks to all of the parents and students who helped make this happen - especially Missy Gallert; Sharon Steensen and Kristie Formolo. I am once again reminded why I have the best band parents in the world!
Yours in music,
