About Mr. Rukavina
Mr. Rukavina in Rome, Italy!
Mr. Rukavina - or "Mr. Roo" as he is known in the halls of Mitchell - has been a teacher with the Racine Unified School District since 1989. Mr. Rukavina teaches the Mitchell Middle School 6th Grade Beginning Band; 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Concert Bands; Pit Band for the Spring Musical; Mitchell Elementary School 5th Grade Beginning Band and the Mitchell Symphony Band. He is the co-fine arts coordinator for Mitchell Middle School and he also serves on the RUSD Superintendent Advisory Council.
Originally from Kenosha, WI - Mr. Rukavina has also taught at Gilmore Middle School, Beginning Band at Dr. Jones, Giese and Goodland Elementary Schools, Jazz Ensemble at Horlick High School and has been at Mitchell Middle School since the 1994/95 school year. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Instrumental Music Education K-12 from the University of Wisconsin - Parkside where he studied saxophone and clarinet with the late Dr. Tim Bell and he also holds a Master of Science Degree in Administrative Leadership and Supervision from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
Mr. Rukavina is a former marching member of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from Rockford, Illinois and was awarded a Regiment Achievement Award in 1985. He has designed field shows for marching bands in Wisconsin; Illinois; Tennessee and Florida. Mr. Rukavina is currently the director of the Lighthouse Brigade of Racine and has been involved with the Brigade programs since 1990. He is also Vice-President of MACBDA (Mid-America Competing Band Director's Association) a summer marching band circuit the Lighthouse Brigade competes in each season. The Lighthouse Brigade is the defending 2017 MACBDA Champion.
Mr. Rukavina has performed with Arturo Sandoval; Ed Schassanusy; Dave Sammuels; Steve Houghton; Allen Visutti; The Bill Sargent Big Band; The Ralph Berger Swing Orchestra of Chicago; The Racine Symphony Orchestra; The SE Wisconsin All-Star Big Band; The UW-Parkside Reunion Big Band and The Kenosha Pops Band. He is a member of Music Educator's National Conference; Racine Band Boosters; Phantom Regiment Booster Club and the Phantom Regiment Alumni Association.
In the Fall of 1996, Mr. Rukavina formed the Mitchell Symphony Band and has taken this group to national music festivals in St. Louis, Missouri; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Atlanta, Georgia; Dallas, Texas; Williamsburg, Virginia and New York City, New York.
Mr. Rukavina is a diehard and devoted fan of the greatest football team in the world - DA BEARS. In his free time he also loves to read, travel, bike and spend time with his wife, Karen and daughter, Jennifer.
